What is a drip edge?
A drip edge is an L-shaped metal flange installed along the eaves and rakes of a roof. It creates a "drip" point that forces rainwater away from the wooden structure and directly into the gutter system — especially important in Orillia and Simcoe County.
Three reasons every roof needs one
- Preserving fascia and soffit — without a drip edge, water runs down the fascia board or curls under the shingles into the soffit, causing wood rot, mould and structural weakening.
- Preventing water infiltration behind siding — water can travel into vinyl siding, stucco or brickwork.
- Protecting your warranty — premium manufacturers like CertainTeed, CR Systems and Euroshield require a drip edge for their system warranty to remain valid; skipping it can void long-term protection.
Installation matters
A drip edge only works if it's installed correctly. Positioned too far back, or in the wrong order relative to the underlayment, it can actually trap water.
